RARE!!! Very rare, so-called "whorehouse" candles, matches used to time the session with a prostitute at a maison close, whorehouse in Paris or anywhere else! Matchbox size box with pull-out "draw" with 24 wax candles with l
iteable
tips; the tips of a few of the candles have
decomposed due to age
. The box has an unused striker on one end + a small hole with a metal rivet at the top, a
receptacle
for the candle. At the start of the "recontre", the prostitute lights the candle and when it dies out, it's over! A clever, luminous timing device.
Photo on the front of Parisian music-hall and later Zeigfeld Follies star performer, Anna Held. The box tells us a lot about itself. Notations on either side: manufactured in Belgium for Roche & Cie (Company), winners of the
Grand Prix Paris 1900
(unclear what they won the prize for, however the Exposition Universelle took place in Paris in 1900). Roche & Cie was located in Paris at 7 rue Caumartin. Scan says it best!!
1.5 x 3" box with 24 candles in very good
condition: box shows a bit of handling at the edges + small tear on the left side of the candle "tray" + a few candles tops show loss of liteable coating at the tops, otherwise in a remarkable state of conservation
