LEVIATHAN
“The pirate ship was seized in a deadly embrace of thrashing coils; the hooked talons of the towering monster reaching for the sails and rigging and swiftly tearing them to shreds. A menacing finned head flared either side of fierce dragon jaws, its wings parted the waves about the ship like giant rising blades, shielding its trophy. Once the dragon had feasted its wrath on the body of the ship it crashed down on to the broken hull, smashing its remains to nothing.”
There are greater dangers than rocks or reefs that lie beneath the surface of the deep waters of the Southern Ocean. There are dragons. Great sea dwelling monsters created by the Wizards and later copied by the enemy, to defend the shores of the Forgotten Island.
To traverse the approaches to the Wizards’ Island in safety, a friendly galleon must lower a special instrument, called a washwail or sea chime and drag it on a long rope below the wake of the ship. The passage of the finned pipe through the water, crafted in the form of a fish, creates a penetrating whine thus informing the vigilant leviathans on the ocean floor that the vessel above carries the Wizards’ favour. Any ship daring to near the sapphire surf of the island haven without the protection of a sea chime must suffer the fate of an enemy. For the mighty beasts, with long, serpentine bodies and vast fin wings that lurk in the giant kelp forests, will rise at the approach of a large ship and if the familiar moan of the washwail is not heard, break surface in a mountain of foam and scale and fall upon the doomed interloper.
Enemy pirates like the ill-fated Malbrad have frequently tried to penetrate the powerful wall of protection that surrounds the island, lured by rumour of its fabulous wealth. The evil captain foolishly thought that if he imitated the white sails of the Wizards’ ships, just as, to avoid Vrorst’s gaze, the Wizards’ servants artfully hoist the black sails of the enemy, he might slip unchallenged through the island’s defences and lay hands on the treasures of the golden shores.
But Malbrad did not know that the Wizards’ had developed the washwail as a means of identifying friendly ships and before he could save his skin or those of his evil crew, his ship was thrown into a terrifying vortex caused by the vast form of a leviathan as it spiralled up through the depths to claim him!
Malbrad and his black confederates were never heard of again.
