Black candles are extremely powerful in candle magick because they represent the absence or void of any and all color and therefore they do not radiate or emit any vibration of its own, instead it absorbs rather than emits energy.  Then as it burns, it "releases" only that which has been placed upon it.  Black represent the "still of the night", inertia, the deep cold & tranquil waters, the deepest recesses of the subconscious mind.  A burning black candle symbolizes "Light coming out of the darkness."
